Braces

Braces are the most popular fixed orthodontic appliance.

The precision and innovation in the modern braces are often hidden by their small size. In fact, braces are used as a benchmark for all other treatment modalities, with people often asking if a particular appliance works as well as braces. Braces straighten teeth using brackets, bands and arch wires. These deliver a constant gentle force on the teeth to move them into the desired position.

Metal Braces

Traditional braces are made of stainless steel brackets that are affixed to the teeth. A wire is threaded through slots in the brackets and secured with tiny rubber bands called “modules”. These modules can be silver but also come in a wide range of colours. A great option for children to brighten up their smile while also making them feel involved in their treatment.

Porcelain (clear) braces

Porcelain braces are much less visible than metal braces which makes them a popular option with more cosmetically conscious older teenage and adult patients. The porcelain brackets are affixed to the teeth and a metal wire is threaded through the slots and secured with tiny clear rubber bands called “modules”. Porcelain brackets are made of very fine, translucent porcelain and require a higher level of care.

Lingual braces

Many people want to straighten their teeth without everyone seeing their braces. Lingual braces are placed on the interior side of the teeth. This way, when you smile and speak, nobody can see that you are wearing braces.

Usually, lingual braces are placed only on the upper teeth, while the lower teeth have regular clear braces on the front.  Sometimes, lingual braces can be fitted on the upper and lower teeth as well.

Lingual braces are a fully customised appliance system, and required considerable planning, laboratory steps and clinical skill to achieve excellent results that are no different to the results achieved with conventional braces. Because of the extra time required for each adjustment appointments, treatment fees for lingual braces are higher than similar treatment with conventional braces.
